The talent coming out of Northeast India has been getting bigger and better year after year, and 2016 is no exception. Many new and upcoming artists from different parts of the region released quality compositions last year which cemented the fact that the future of the local music scene is indeed very bright. Even though the independent music scene has not been able to grow in the Northeast at a pace it should have, it hasn’t stopped young musicians from following their dreams. We take a look at some of the most promising names we are expecting to hear a lot from in the days to come.
The young singer from Dimapur has released two singles so far and is one of the most promising talents from Nagaland. He aims to make music which inspires people and helps make a positive impact on society. His debut single ‘Rise and Walk’ was a great success. Moreover, his willingness to experiment with different genres means that listeners get to hear something new and fresh every time he releases a song.
Krantik from Guwahati released his debut album ‘Xekh Abelir Gaan’ last October. The best thing about him as an artiste is his versatility which is apparent as soon as you listen to the album. The songs vary in themes, emotions and moods, and all of it has been beautifully captured by Krantik’s voice. Of late, there haven’t been a lot of artistes like him from Assam who have come out with quality music, but in Krantik’s case, he puts a lot of thought into the overall sound and feel of his music, which should work to his advantage in becoming a household name.
When it comes to the local music scene, Tripura is the only one state in the Northeast where live gigs and bands are a rarity but the trend is slowly changing. Koloma is one such band which has become the face of change in Tripura. Their music is inspired by the folk music of Tripura and is usually blended with genres like blues, jazz and country. Their debut music video ‘Mwrwi Mwrwi’ was well received by music lovers in the State and beyond.
JC Kitt also known as Thanthing Kasar from Ukhrul is a rising star in the music scene of Manipur. He was part of a band earlier, but decided to go solo sometime this year. His debut single ‘Last Walk in The Rain’ which talks about people you have loved and lost got a lot of positive feedback from music lovers. He also plans to release a music video very soon.
The electronic music scene is growing in the Northeast and this talented act from Meghalaya is one that everyone has been talking about. Kevin Lywait from Jowai and Alexandria Syiem from Shillong formed Ha Lor which is a Khasi word for ‘being on top’. Their first single ‘Too Fast Too late’ came in June 2016 which was a big hit among young fans. If they manage to come out with catchy originals at regular intervals, they could very well be the next big thing to come out of Meghalaya.
