‘Reggae specifically roots reggae – for me is a healer and I believe that it is healing time, questioning time, and breaking away from the generic time. Although, reggae as a musical genre has been around in Manipur, we do not have much artistes or promoters specific to the reggae scene. Our mission is to connect with whoever is into reggae and so a “Reggae Gathering” made sense to start with.’ says Shantanu, a promoter cum reggae enthusiast from Manipur.
Shantanu goes by the moniker NUSANZ which he defines as a reflective of our times and our generation that does not belong anywhere, does not want to be typecast and chooses to be culturally confused. He organizes Reggae Dance Gatherings and juggle beats at most of the B-Boy Jams in Imphal.
He found his love for the reggae music in Delhi, where he stayed for 13 years and brought the love to Manipur when he decided to come back for good. He extends his gratitude towards the amazing people at The Giving Tree Family, which is a collection of artistes, enthusiasts and architects who all met at The Giving Tree in Imphal. This family has been bringing in new wave of artistes and sound in Manipur, the most recent one being – Hang Massive, BFR Soundsystem, Laihui’s collaboration with Cello player from Honolulu.
On the 21st of May, 2017 the MDU (Manipur Dramatic Union) Hall, which is one of the oldest halls where many theatrical dramas have been staged, will open its doors for the first edition of the Reggae Gathering. ‘The place has a nice charm; we are very pleased to host our first “Reggae Gathering” at such a beautiful hall.’ The show starts at 4 pm onwards.
Shillong massive, Dewdrops will grace the occasion with their energetic live performance. Dewdrops are a roots reggae/ska/dub/rockers/rocksteady band, hailing from Shillong and Rymbai Village in the Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya. They are one band to watch out for not just as a reggae band but as an emerging band with so much potential that has represented the Northeast at the Goa Reggae Sunsplash, 2017.
‘Even after much anticipation, we missed out on hosting them at Into The Wild ’17 because of the economic blockade, which extended to passenger vehicles. So, we have always been on a look-out for a better date. As we recovered from Into The Wild, a one-of-a-kind two day festival amidst the wilderness of Manipur, there was BFR SOUNDSYSTEM #onestepforwardtour in March. Finally, the time has arrived.’ As their wait comes to an end; each one of us at Vibes Northeast wishes them all the best.
