Brahmaputra Raga Jazz is an initiative of Banyan Tree Events, supported by the Tata Trusts. The idea is to identify and promote young and talented bands from Northeast India. The bands can be based out of any city across India.
Northeast India is gifted with a unique sensibility of music. There are numerous virtuoso performers whose work reflect heavy metal, classical rock, grunge, ballads, soft rock and so on, with each group having its own signature tune and a huge following of aficionados.
In the process of discovering new music, Brahmaputra Raga Jazz seeks to be a two-way enriching process where music of the Northeast and ancient Indian ragas will mingle. This unique musical bridge will create a greater understanding between the two genres.
This project has been dedicated to the renowned legendary creative genius, Bhupen Hazarika.
The top 5 bands identified through this project will be awarded a chance to record their music for an album and also perform live in concert at both Assam and Delhi!
The top bands will be identified through the following process –
Round 1 – Online Entry
Bands or individual musicians registered and sent their entries online along with sample videos.
Round 2 – Live Challenge
From the online entries, a total of 12 bands have been shortlisted, they will get a chance to showcase their music live to a panel of eminent judges. Here they will not only perform one piece of their choice, but also present one fusion piece where elements of Indian raga will be woven into their existing repertoire.
The shortlisted bands will perform live tomorrow in the final round scheduled to be held at Asom Kristi Kendra Auditorium, Dhanketi near St Peter’s School. The judges for the event are guitar maestro Rudy Wallang of Soulmate and renowned slide guitarist, Debashish Bhattacharya.
