This is about as democratic the underground metal scene gets. Read on to know why!
Defenders Of Metal and Darjeeling Meta-Legion have worked out a deal with the prestigious Bloodstock Open Air Festival through which one Indian or Nepali band will get a slot to play the festival. Under the festival’s Metal 2 The Masses initiative, which looks at giving smaller bands a chance to do the festival experience, Defenders Of Metal and Darjeeling Meta-Legion have undertaken to do the honours for the India and Nepal region.
“It is a band competition for Metal & Hard Rock Bands from Nepal & India and we (Defenders Of Metal & Darjeeling Meta-Legion) are representing both India and Nepal. One Winning Band either from India or Nepal will get a Slot to play at the New Blood Stage at the Bloodstock Festival in the U.K. in August this Year.” explains Hozo Rai of metal biggies Grungy Morphins and also of Darjeeling Metal-Legion.
He proceeds further to explain the process of applying and short-listing for and of bands respectively.
“The prelims will be Held in Gangtok for the Bands from India & and for the bands from Nepal, it will be held in Pokhara and Kathmandu. More details on the Preliminary rounds will be disclosed once the registration process is over because only then we’ll have the exact count of the number of the participating bands and will be easier for us to schedule the event. The prelims will take place over the period of 3 months i.e. from March to May.”
“Registration forms will be made available from the 15th of January through our official facebook page. The bands need to fill in the forms and submit along with a small Registration Fee (it will be confirmed and given on the Registration Form itself). Once we have that, we will schedule the event and give out the roster to the participating bands so that they will know the dates when they will be slotted to compete in the preliminary round.”
It is interesting to notice that every band who applies gets to play at the prelims not unlike the mockery of public voting systems and ‘likes’ that dominate the billing of a college fest line-up.
Hozo reasons, “Yes, because we can’t judge a band through a recorded song. All bands sound good on the recordings. In order to separate the chaff from the grain, we need to judge them on their live performance. And I think, that way, all the bands will be satisfied as well.”
This year’s BOA line-up sees two of the Big 4 in Slayer and Anthrax, Danish heavy-metallers King Diamond to kings of modern metal, Lamb of God among other staggering international acts. To share stage with such acts should be incentive enough for bands to hit the jamming room hard.
Darjeeling Metal-Legion (DML) is a small Metal Community where the metalheads of Darjeeling have come together to promote the metal scene of Darjeeling.
