Said to be started in the 1920s, abbreviated from popular music, pop music can be said to be originated from rock and roll, but as a music genre it took inspiration from various genres which is why it is also called the most eclectic of all the genres. Generally, pop music is made to appeal to the masses; so, it does not have any target audience as such. It often uses electric guitars, drums and bass for its instrumentation and for the vocals, it derives influence from soul and country music with repeated choruses, melodic tunes and catchy hooks.
To be true, pop music gained momentum only after the launch of satellite music channels and it is also believed that MTV helped make stars like Michael Jackson and Madonna, and in reverse they helped to make MTV as well. Another artist who ruled pop music for three decades is Canadian singer Bryan Adams whose song ‘Summer of 69’ topped the charts all over the world.
Pop music was always dominated by the American and British music industries but in the 80’s it became very popular in Asia. In India, popular music has strong ties with Hindi film industry and pop stars emerged in forms of singers like Alisha Chinoy, KK, Lucky Ali, Shaan, Papon, Zubeen Garg, Anushka Manchanda, Sunidhi Chauhan, and also Bombay Vikings who work on independent albums as well as do playback singing for feature films.
