Aiban Nangsang Lyngdoh, known by his stage name as Ace Shorty, from Meghalaya is the latest entry to the rap scene of the Northeast. Still in high school, he is out with a music video titled ‘Don’t We Care’ with fellow musician Luck Cheng. He also has a team called ‘Black Rag Squad’ which comprises of young and talented rappers/singers, dancers and music producers who work independently to pursue their dreams of making it big in the music industry.
When did you become interested in rap?
It was my brother’s friend who introduced me to rhyming. Some of my first influences are Tupac Shakur, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Eminem, Ludacris, Fabolous and Young Jeezy. From there, I took it as a hobby until I discovered few Shillong rappers from Reverbnation. Later, I recorded music with my friends and had fun sharing it online and performing on stages. This made me realize that I really wanted to pursue music professionally and I understood the true meaning of being an artist.
Tell us about the music video
It was back in November 2015 when my buddy Luck Cheng who featured in the video, came up with an idea to do a song together. We had planned to do a song and a music video long back but we couldn’t get the perfect project to work on. The writing process and the recording session took place in December 2015 and we made our friends to the song, they liked it and pushed us to make a music video.
We both decided to make the video simple, youthful and just show our friends having a good time in the video. I really thank each and every single one of them for being part of our video.
Are you working on EP or album?
Yes, I am currently working on my mixtape and I will continue my other remaining projects after I complete my exams. I will work hard on this mixtape so that I can release this year, I will also try my best to collaborate with some of the best rappers, singers and music producers.
