Dehlvees is as pop duo comprising of Akshay Raheja and Suhail Yusuf Khan. Both are well-known names in the music industry, and so it is not surprising for music lovers to look forward to this collaboration between two talented artists who come from two totally different musical backgrounds to create something that is a bit of this, a bit of that and nothing short of amazing. The duo’s first single, ‘Mann Basiya’, was about unrequited love. They recently released their second single ‘Mahira’, so we spoke with both of them to know more about their music.
The first thing that comes to your mind when you hear about the duo is the unique name. Akshay reveals that poets and musicians who sang in the courts of the Mughal emperors were called ‘Dehlvis’. ‘It is true that the origin of the name of our band dates back to the time of the Mughals. But essentially, it is a term used to describe people belonging to Delhi. It has a very poetic feel to it and we thought that would be cool.’
‘MAHIRA’ is actually a Hebrew word meaning ‘being brave’. The song in itself is a treat for the ears and the experience of the song is somehow elevated with the superbly animated music video. ‘Mahira‘s music video was quite a challenging and an expensive task to be honest. Both Akshay and I are huge fans of animation and wanted to try it for one of our tunes. Somehow we ended up bumping into like-minded people who liked the song and had worked on animation videos before. One thing led to another and this video was born,’ shares Suhail. ‘We felt that animation will compliment the lyrics which are pretty deep,’ added Akshay.
Dehlvees’ sound cannot be described as simple pop, it has other elements thrown in which makes it so much more. ‘I like pop, and I have an electronica influence. Suhail brings his classical influences to the table as well, so you can say that our sound is not your classic idea of pop,’ shares Akshay. They both may be from different musical backgrounds but they work well together and this shows in their music. ‘Akshay usually starts a groove or a baseline and I come up with melodies and lyrics,’ informed Suhail.
The reason for their great work-chemistry may have something to do with the fact that they have known each other since they were kids. ‘Akshay and I have been friends since our school days. We’ve always bonded really well. When Akshay made his exit from Faridkot, we got involved in several commercial projects together and ended up making few tunes as well,’ said Suhail.
The duo has plans to start doing live performances only after releasing enough originals. We hope that happens soon because they will be a treat to witness live.
