Abhi Saikia, one half of the producer duo – Rainforest Records, is an aspiring music producer/DJ and a graduate from the music department of St Anthony’s College, Shillong. He met Shankuraj Konwar through the social media site, Facebook. The two bonded well and started working on a collaborative project. ‘I started working on the instrumental in June. The sample track had very basic drums and melodies to which Shankuraj added words and vocals.’
Jolopropat meaning waterfall has been romantically personified by Shankuraj’s soulful vocal textures. The chorus goes something like, ‘a waterfall of love unleashes her chains, stabs my heart with a sweet pain. She unties her heart and sprinkles little rainbows afar. With threads from the clouds and with droplets of the rain I weave our band of love.’
The song is a wonderful composition of ambient sounds layered with electronic elements and the cherry on top is the warm vocals, which add a vibrant feel to the song. It is a great blend of soothing drums, chopped female vocals with subtly sampled saxophone and short but tempestuous guitar riffs by Kangkan Rabha. ‘The purpose was to make the song globally appealing.’
The success stories of Despacito and Gangnam Style make us believe that in music, language is no barrier, and the commercially sounding, ‘Jolopropat’ is sure to be a hit with music lovers within and beyond the region. What is great is that this is just the first of many projects that the duo are working on. Such intrinsic sounds will definitely ignite a new wave of intriguing compositions among the artistes of the region.
